Over/Under (Totals) Betting Explained
Over/under (totals) is a bet on whether the combined match total — usually goals — finishes above or below a line set by the bookmaker, such as 2.5. Over 2.5 needs 3+ goals; Under 2.5 wins with 0–2.
How it works
The bookmaker sets a line (e.g. 2.5 goals). You bet whether the actual total will be Over or Under that number.
Half-goal lines (2.5, 3.5) cannot push. Whole-goal lines (2.0, 3.0) can push and refund the stake if the total lands exactly on the line.
Worked example
Scenario: Over 2.5 goals priced at 1.90, you stake €10. The match ends 2–1 (3 goals).
Outcome: Three goals exceed 2.5, so Over wins: you return €19 (€10 × 1.90).
Pros
- Independent of which team wins
- Easy to model from team scoring trends

Cons
- A single late goal can flip the result

Frequently asked questions
What does Over 2.5 goals mean?
It wins if the match has 3 or more total goals; it loses with 2 or fewer.
Can an over/under bet be refunded?
Only on whole-goal lines (e.g. 2.0). If the total lands exactly on the line the bet pushes and the stake is returned.
